How much to set aside for taxes on Fiverr
Selling gigs on Fiverr is self-employment. Fiverr collects a W-9 from U.S. sellers, reports qualifying earnings to the IRS, and withholds nothing.
In the worked example below, a Fiverr designer in North Carolina should set aside 17% of every payout — $17 of every $100.
Set aside from every deposit
17%
≈ per year / per month
$7,140
$595/mo
Rule of thumb: for every $1,000 you earn, set aside $170.
An estimate for planning purposes, not tax advice or a filing. Uses 2026 federal brackets (Rev. Proc. 2025-32), self-employment tax with the §199A (QBI) deduction, and state-level rates (Tax Foundation, 2026). Married-filing-separately filers should use "Single" as the closest estimate. Local income taxes (e.g. NYC, Ohio municipal) aren't modeled and would owe more than shown.
Which tax forms Fiverr sends
| Form | What it reports | Threshold (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 1099-K | Gross payments for your gigs | Over $20,000 and over 200 transactions (lower in some states) |
- Fiverr keeps a 20% commission on every order. If your 1099-K reports the order totals, the commission is a deduction — make sure it's on your Schedule C.
- Under the restored federal threshold, a seller with $15,000 of orders won't get a 1099-K but still owes self-employment tax on the profit.
The form is paperwork, not the trigger: the IRS is explicit that you must report all income whether or not you receive a 1099.

Hypothetical numbers, single filer, 2026 brackets. The calculator above is preloaded with them.
| Amount | |
|---|---|
| Gross Fiverr orders | $42,000 |
| Fiverr commission (20%) | − $8,400 |
| Software & fonts | − $900 |
| Net profit | $32,700 |
| Self-employment tax | $4,620 |
| Federal income tax | $1,143 |
| North Carolina income tax | $1,305 |
| Set aside | 17% of income · $595/mo |
Skipping the deductions would push the set-aside to 23% — tracking them is worth about $2,520 a year here. See North Carolina's self-employment tax breakdown for how the state part is figured.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I set aside for taxes on Fiverr?
It depends on your profit, filing status and state. In the example on this page — a Fiverr designer in North Carolina with $42,000 of income and $9,300 of deductions — the answer is about 17% of every payout, or $595 a month. Without tracking those deductions it would be 23%. Enter your own numbers in the calculator above.
Will Fiverr send me a 1099?
Form 1099-K (gross payments for your gigs): Over $20,000 and over 200 transactions (lower in some states). Whether or not a form arrives, the IRS requires you to report all of the income.
Does Fiverr take taxes out of my pay?
No. Fiverr sellers are paid as independent contractors, so no income tax or self-employment tax is withheld. You cover it yourself with quarterly estimated payments — the next federal one is due January 15, 2027.
Do I have to pay quarterly taxes on Fiverr income?
If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax for the year after withholding and credits, the IRS expects quarterly estimated payments. Paying too little, too late can mean an underpayment penalty even if you pay in full in April.
